Ellensburg: The newest Certified Washington State Creative District

Nuwave Gallery is thrilled to be part of Ellensburg, Washington's newest Certified Creative District, as announced by ArtsWA on February 8, 2024. This designation is the result of collaborative efforts by various community organizations, including the City of Ellensburg, the Ellensburg Arts Commission, and many others, who worked together to develop the Creative Industry Strategic Plan. This plan aims to support the arts and establish Ellensburg as a vibrant hub where artists can live, work, and flourish.

Additionally, this designation will help create affordable housing options within the industry and enhance the overall quality of life in Ellensburg through arts and culture.

Kelle Vandenberg, Arts & Economic Development Manager for the City of Ellensburg, expressed excitement about the certification, stating, "We are excited to be awarded the Creative District certification from ArtsWA! It is an incredible honor and opportunity for our community." Vandenberg highlighted the benefits of the certification, such as further support for artists, enhanced arts education programs, and the celebration of Ellensburg through cultural events and festivals.

ArtsWA, the Washington State Arts Commission, sees Creative Districts as crucial components of the larger creative economy, which includes professions ranging from software developers to tattoo artists. The creative sector is a significant economic driver in Washington, contributing over ten percent of the state's GDP in 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

The creative sector in Ellensburg is valued at $25.7 million, according to the 2020 Creative Vitality Suite Index. This sector supports creators, fosters innovation, and contributes to the local economy's growth.

Mayor Rich Elliot emphasized Ellensburg's long-standing tradition of supporting the creative arts, stating, "Receiving the Certified Creative District designation from ArtsWA will lift the creative sector and help drive Ellensburg’s economy, enhance our overall community, and firmly establish Ellensburg as a place of vitality and creativity where artists thrive."
